Need some info.
I have a 93 Accord Dx for a daily driver. It has about 185k on it and the CV joints are about to go out. Have any of you guys replaced the CV's or axles? Was it very difficult? Any special tools needed?
I have experience working on RWD domestics, but I've never worked on a front wheel drive car. Any info or experience you guys have would be appreciated. TIA Jon |

Hey!
Welcome to the board.. Depends on if you're planning on replacing the cv or rebuilding it.. Replacing is quiet easy.. Rebuilding will be harder. If you decide to rebuild I highly recommend you get a Haynes manual... As for tools, nothing special is required.. the basics : prybar, chisel, hammer, cutting tools... Nothing special. Of you decide to replace the boot with split boot, which can be installed without taking out the driveaxle, you should still remove the axle. So that you can clean it up, and lube. good luck! let us know what happens. JP

if you have not messed with this setup before and plan on doing it on your own give yourself some time and patience to learn how it works.
I do not recommend using a split boot because they will break at the seem if driven on hard. You will need simple tools plus a ball joint puller and torque wrench. It is pretty easy once you see what you are doing but can be a pain in the ass. 1. remove wheel and brake caliper and axle nut 2. loosen the botttom ball joint nut and pop the hub off of the lower control arm by removing the ball joint. 3.remove the axle from the hub and swing the hub towards the front of the car and out of the way. 4.you are now free to work on the axle as you wish bu this is also a good time to check hub bearings, ball joints, steering linkage and other miscellaneous items in the suspension/steering setup of the car. If you have any questions feel free to ask. |

I agree with urbanL..
The splits arent as reliable.. just easier to install, but no worth on the long run.

you might need an air wrench or a torch to remove the axle nut. believe me i tried doing it without those and it is a pain in the rear.
