One rubbed to death, other ready to die

Its a 96 Accord EX 4dr, set up is: Neuspeed springs(yellow), Tokico shocks, Nitto 450 215/45 ZR 17 on Enkei RF1, 17x7JJ

I am told it was dropped 2" in front, 1.5" rear.

Driver's front tire blew, the inner edge worn to steel belt...the other will go if you look at it hard. Rears are OK.

Moral of the story: be careful about letting my 19 year old out with an insurance settlement check.

Since I am walking behind the elephants at the parade, I would appreciate someone helping me figure out what shovel to carry...thanks

it does not happen to know what offset the rims is. most likely that is the cause of the messed up tire. and a 215 mm wide seems a bit too much for an accord.

Pardon my ignorance, when you say offset, are we talking the left/right view looking at the tire tread, not the donut?

stefan, that size is right for the ACCORD..

I'm also running 215/45/17

stock tires: 195/60R15
diameter: 24.2" width: 7.7"

current tires: 215/45R17
diameter: 24.6" width: 8.5"

i'm going to have to agree with hondaman - you could go with tires that are closer to the dimensions of your stock setup (205/45s would work well), but definitely check the offset as well.

isn't that a bit on the edge ? i know that anything bigger will make the tires rub. basically we have the same chassis, and i don't see a lot of space for wider tires on my car. i really don't know what offset are his wheels, but on the accords anything bigger than 42 will rub

most peeps with 4-5-6 gen ACCORD who go with 17s will either do 215/45 or 215/40 ... 205 is in theory is what you shoud get, as is a 40 profile tire.. Why do may peeps go with 45?? I did it to have some extra protection for the rims..


8.5in wheels are a little too wide for our cars.. So with 7-7.5 and a 215 tire. the outer edge of the tire will be pretty much flat with the outer side of the rim. Otherwise the outer face of the rim will be standing out a little more. For aesthetics 215 is especially more convenient if you keep a higher psi in your tire..
Higher pressure = stiffer sidewall, and if you hit something the tire will blow and the rim has a better chance of survival..

if u have a 215/40/17 the overall diameter is about 1 cm smaller than the stock tire, and 215/45/17 is about 1cm bigger than than the stock tire. i agree with you about the stuff with the extra protection. maybe he should try some wheel spacers there ?

The wheel is 8"(203.2mm) out/out. Mounting surface is 2.5"(63.5mm) to the front side of the wheel, makes mounting surface 1.5" to centerline, so this is a 38mm offset?

Just trying to get the logic right.

BTW, the Enkei redirect for the tire (discounttiredirect.com) does not list this wheel when searching for a set for 96 Accord....r-r-rut-row!

Accord Man....you only had 3 min to write it, it will take me far longer to get a grip on it ... I appreciate the education but I am dumber than a bucket of hammers here...

zoinks, your wheel is 8" wide? that could be the problem. i would go with a 7" width, definitely no bigger than 7.5" for an accord unless you want the tires sticking out from the body and/or rubbing to death like yours did.

8" is a very wide wheel for an Accord. 7-7.5 with the correct offset (~42mm) will fit very nicely.

Now I'm really confused...the wheel is marked 17x7 JJ.

When I take my rubber ruler out, I keep getting more than 7".

The tire is still on the rim, so I am going through the spokes & measuring an I.D.; 'squaring' the measurement by holding wood blocks against the sides of the rim.

Is the 'JJ' a secret code...

if it says 17x7, then you have a 7" wheel. measuring through the spokes gives you the extra width, b/c their measurement is from lip to lip where the tire actually mounts (i think).

i'm not sure what the JJ stands for. maybe "these wheels are going to make your tires rub to death"? lol. i've seen companies that put some kind of code on the wheel that tells you the offset, composition, or finish of the wheel, but never anything like "JJ". have you tried emailing enkei yet?

The email @ Enkei is down, new wedsite development, etc. Anyway the wheel is an 'exclusive', flipping me to discounttiredirect.com....I just finished a online call to them, where I found it to be discontinued...I guess it is a private label wheel. Helpful guy though, said the wheel would work but wouldn't go past 215/45 or 235/40.

So, my thanks to all for your help here, I appreciate it. As time goes by, I hope to become less needy...Next is reinstalling a Wings West body kit.
