What to get for a POS
I have an automatic 97 civic LX. I plan on getting about $1,000 back for taxes and I want to put it all into the engine. But I don't know what to get. I know I will never get anywhere near what a manual could do, but it'd be nice to be a little quicker. My roommate says I should get a $500 Zex nitrous kit (which is tempting), but the nitrous would only be for racing and I'm after more hp for all the time. I'm kinda after the most hp for what money I have, so any ideas on what I should get?

i think it would be sweet if you got a full exhaust system from the headers back, and an intake. the full exhaust when probably take up most of the money with parts and installation, but i got my apc intake from advanced auto parts for $70. i know a lot of guys on here don't like apc, but i have to say i really like my intake. if you have enough money left over, i would get a cold air intake instead of just a short one, but thats costs a lot more.

if you just want to use the 1000 now then u could get all the usual bolt ons, OR you could save up more n go with a turbo or an engine swap. alot of people i talk to now wish they hadnt bought all these bolt ons when they coulda just gotten something that would increase horsepower dramatically. Cuz you cant use say a DC header with a turbo and if you got the engine swap you couldnt use that header for that engine either. unless you made some ghastly mistake and bought the same engine

a faster car buy a new camshaft and then use the rest for bolt-ons. maybe get an extra 20hp out of the motor.

to be honest.....you have $1000. swap in a D16Y5 (HX motor) and do a 5spd swap all at once.....youd still have money left over and youd have a faster car. yay.

i'm sure all the d16 engines are quite cheap...i mean nowadays people want either b/h series that nobody cares about the d16 powerplant.. go for either d16y5(HX) or d16y8(EX)

I did some hunting and found a lot of different engine prices. Anybody got any ideas on where I can get one for the best price?
Also, if I get the engine and put the 5 speed in it, I'll have to put in a clutch. Is that hard? My roomate is a mechanic and he said most places around here wouldn't even try to install a clutch. |

pdiggitydogg's idea would prolly be the most cost-effective choice...unless u plan on running 10 sec.
so if you wanna stay conservative with a little more "oomph" stick with the head swap..

i almost forgot...if you get a vtec head u can mate that with a vtec controller...lower it to whatever rpm u desire and "presto!" cheap and easy power...with plenty of additional power to be made...

yeah it really depends on what you want to do. The only thing is that going from auto->manual is really pricy because you have o put in things like clutch, clutch master cylinder and many other things. Ive done lots of research on this and decieded that its a bad Idea unless my tranny breaks. heres a link on how to do it in an accord. http://www.extremeredline.net/accord...tml#disclaimer
What might be a good idea. Is to swap fro a vtec head. and then do all the stuff I was saying earlier. or do all the stuff I was saying earlier and then start saving for a vtec head and 5spd swap. The 5spd swap is just a pain in the butt and its expensive. So what till your tranny breaks. |
