Boost
I have a 1.6 VTEC motor that i'm putting into my 92 DX. What do I have to do for the motor to handle at least 20LB of boost. I'll be using the Mitsubishi stock TD04 turbo. Also whats the better buy the AEM engin management or the Hondata.

For at least 20lbs I would have it re-sleeved by Golden Eagle or Darton, forged rods, 9:1 CR pistons, and get a Hondata!

I have heard of cars that had 20psi w/ specially made head gaskets to withhold that and non-built internals, but w/ going w/ that amount of boost building the internals rods/pistons etc would benefit you for sure.....
The best place to ask this and any other boost ? would be the turbo forum..... |

I just ordered the pistions and rods but I threw the old ones out with out writing the serial #'s on the parts now I have no idea how I'm going to the correct bearings for my motor. Does any one have a link to somewhere that that can help me. The local dealer said I need the #'s off the old parts that I threw out.

This is a shot in the dark, but I guess that's all you have by making that mistake.
Call Honda Support, not a dealer, but the Head Office Support. If you own the car, have the VIN, they should be able to tell you exactly what you need to know. I've dealt with Ford (my other car is a 66 Mustang). They told me everything, down to what time my engine was turned over for the first time. Maybe you'll get lucky. Manufacturers keep detailed logs of these things for recall purposes. You may have the exact same car as your friend same year and everything but his fuel pump was put in at 2:00am and yours was 5:00pm his could be recalled and not yours. Just a tidbit of info. |

Let me know how helpful they are. My cousin actually works for a honda dealership (how convenient) I can see if Head Office does stuff like that

I went to a machine shop and they said they could cut the bearings to fit. Problems solved.

hold up........TD04 will not boost 20 psi. it will max out around 12-14 psi. you're better off getting at least a T3/T4.

Where do you get your specs. I had a 97 Eclipse GST that this turbo came off of, and I had the boost turned up to 20 LB. Therefore what theory do you know of that says I can't put 20lb of boost on my rebuilt motor from this turbo. Even though it's not a 2.0

You may have had to boost at 20 psi, but more than likely it was more inefficient to run it that high. I think that the max efficiency of the TD04 is around 12-15 psi. Find some flow maps for that turbo, and figure out what CFM you need for your car. Turbos need to be matched to the car. You can't just slap any turbo from any car on any engine and expect it to work well. =)
