Transmissions?
I have a 00 b16a2 in my civic and my transmission is almost finished. My thrid gear won't engage and my 5th gear keeps kicking back due to the fact that the tranny casing is cracked, and it has been leaking gear oil for some time now. I tried to have it welded but it remains to leak and I've been adding gear oil every other day but it is really bad now and its only a matter of time before it locks. Money is an issue right now so i'm looking for the least expensive option. I wanted to know which trannies are compatable with a 1.6L dohc engine from and si or would it be eaiser to buy a new transmission case and have it rebuilt.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan Havent seen you in forever
You least expensive option is really going to either be an LS transmission (S/Y80) or to buy replacement 3rd gear synchros and case (the labor will probably be a lot, unless you pull the transmission yourself - ie: Im just paying labor to have 3 synchros put on my transmission @ $75/hr...and it really shouldnt take more than an hr) An LS trans will cost you probably $300 locally...and is the last option I would choose (but will be the easiest and the cheapest). If you go this route, you can use it for awhile until you want to spend more to fix your b16 trans and then resell it for the same price that you paid. New synchros are about $150 for gears 3-5, from gear-speed sellers on ebay (maybe a little less from honda...but I havent really checked the pricing). I would seriously consider replacing more than just the one 3rd gear synchro since youre in there already. A new case (asuming its not the clutch housing side) will run you probably 150 or more...depending on where you get it. Any B series case will work, so you dont have to be picky. Fixing it will cost you more...but its what I would do |

yeah i agree, I'd drop it myself take it to a good tranny shop and have them swap in the parts you buy yourself.
an LS tranny on a b16 would probably suck. |

Yeah but he says that the case is cracked so its no good anymore. If money is a big issue right now then id say go with the ls tranny. It is going to be alot slower but on the + side you will get better gas mileage.

yeah definately hit up the junkyard, always the cheapest route, basically because the case is cracked and that'll just keep giving you problems.

A s80 gsr or a b16 tranny. How can I tell the difference in the tranny just by looking at it?

ypu cant, unfortunately
ls and gsr both share the same s/y80 sticker, and of course all b series have the same housing Only real way to ID the two, is to open the housing and look at the bearing on the diff |
