Differences between the SOHC and DOHC
this is from the Honda web site
1.6 liter, 16-valve, SOHC VTEC™ engine (115-hp HX, 127-hp, LEV-rated EX) 1.6 liter, 16-valve, DOHC VTEC™ engine (160-hp Si) What are the main differencees between these two engines for a (2000 EX and SI Civic). internally and external can i convert the SOHC to a DOHC? Thanks |

It would basically be a waste to try and convert a D-series to a B-series. |

DOHC = better...
The only way you can "convert" a SOHC to a DOHC engine is swapping out the SOHC for the DOHC. Like said in the first reply, SOHC stands for single overhead cam. DOHC stands for dual overhead cam. |

It's called a "HEAD SWAP" not that difficult. no you can't put a "B" series head on a "D" series block but that's what the letters are for to denote compatability... so since honda made a "D" series DOHC motor (d16zc d15b1 (not sure on that one but there was a non-vtec dohc 1.5 l in an early integra) so you could use that head as well. You can do it but the power differences your noting are between the D16y8 SOHC VTEC motor in the EX and the b16a2 DOHC VTEC motor in the SI. these are two totally different motors. One is a "D" series motor the other is a "B" series motor. the D16zc that i mentioned earlier puts out similar numbers to the si engine but it is a "D" series block and head so you could use that. the swap's are much less common and hence not well documented your best bet if you really want DOHC is to do a motor swap. |

quick question...i have an '00 civic ex. i know its single overhead cam...but is it VTEC, or not VTEC...is there a way to tell/ tune this vtec? when does it kick in. If i had to guess, i would say at about 4300-4500...but chances are I am mistaking this for something else...any help would be appreciated. By the way, there is a LEV sticker on the window, would that be a clue?

In my experience ALL hondas kick in at that RPM, ive never driven a vehicle with Vtec so i dont know what it would feel like... As far as i know, all 97--> EX's have V-TEC.. It SHOULD say Vtec on your Head, but if it doesnt, you just look for the Vtec Solenid (I believe its located between the head and the throttle body...) But i could be talking out my ass.. so wait for someone with a real car to answer yoru question

yes it's vtec
lev means Low Emission Vehicle (almost all honda's qualify for this so no it's not a clue) no the solenoid will not say vtec on it. and the vtec initiation point should be 5200 rpm it can kick on earlier or a little later (depending on throttle position) |
