bike opinions

Hmmmm I am serisouly considering selling my POS car and getting a bike for the summer. I would love to have somthing like the Yamaha YZF R6 ( http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products...mid=8&iid=3477) but a little cheaper.....anyone know a decent bike I should look for? and is this even a good idea??

Depends on what year your looking into.If your a beginner rider I would stay in the 600cc or below range.Each bike: Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki...have their ups or downs...just depends on what you want more of...style, comfort, seating, less weight, performance, and has no major downs with the way its built.If you want a cheap bike look into a 2000 or older model depending.

Depends on year, state you live, driving record, and so forth.But if your young and without much experience I can tell you that it would be much better getting a slightly used bike.But definetly do some research and get more info before making a decision on what to pick...their should be no rush so you get whats best.

Is it very hard? Not at all, if you can ride a bicycle (balance two wheels), have good coordination, and can drive a stick it should be very easy.I didn't know how to drive a stick when I got my license last year, but it was pretty simple.I took a 3 day course with the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation).First day its all in class stuff and the two other days are just out riding.I learned so much there.The price varies for the course though...some states its like $45 and I paid $195 here.Its worth every penny though.You'll need full coverage if you have a loan.Full coverage covers theft, bodily injury, collision, etc.If you only have liability...then just make sure you don't crash the bike.Most people get collision and theft... prices vary greatly...but they also vary on the type of bike.. the smaller cc the cheaper insuarance.Invest in buying good gear and if you don't have the money now...save up, and take the MSF course for sure.You can get your license/endorsement after you pass the MSF, take a piece of paper to the DMV, driving test waived, license granted, but you pay a fee...your state may be different but here in FL thats how it works.

I pay $2100 a year w/ no collision...WOW...if you have a good/great driving record, age matters... the older the better, if u take the course (some states reduce cost for taking course), you pick a used and 600cc or less bike then you should be way under this amount and then it just depends on what you want to cover.If its just liability then it should be WAY down.

ok great thanks HNDAGRL........yeh they rape me with insurance cost..... 18 year old male with a "sports car".....i try to explain its not much of a sports car with a 4cyl 1.6L......but it has 2 doors and bucket seats so they say i will go faster

i would think insurance on any crotch rocket would be more expensive than on a car.....more of a chance of getting hurt and crashing and dieing...plus they are faster....

Listen to HNDAGRL she is very right.. Beginners dont need superbikes, especially a new R6. I just bought my first motorcycle last week. I bought a cruiser (Yamaha V-Star 650 Custom) Its a great bike to ride back and forth to work on or go out for long rides. My insurance is cheap, but I only have liability ($155 a year).. Actually for me the R6 wasnt going to cost much more ($179 a year) to insure. (Im married, 24, and have a spotless driving record.)

I rode my friends 2K3 R6 the other day.. Its a lot of motorcycle, very, very powerful.. He has been riding for a couple of years and he said it kinda scares him because itll wheelie so easy.

I would suggest starting out on a Ninja 250 or 500.. Or get a cruiser if you dont really have to have a sportbike. They are very comfy to ride, comfort depends mostly on the rider though. I personally didnt think the R6 was all the comfy, but Ill probably end up buying one to go with my cruiser in a year or two anyhow.

Another good site for beginners is, www.beginnerbikes.com. I would also highly suggest taking the MSF course. They provide motorcycles for you, in Ohio if you pass the MSF course you dont have to take the riding part to get your license. You also get an insurance break. Its only $25 in Ohio too, so you see itll pay for itself very quickly.

For a first bike, I'd go with a CBR.

I use to do league dirt biking, same general concept. Except it cost a hell of a lot more to insure a dirt bike. I've done trials (125-250 class) and desert moto xr650 (thats a whoopin 275lbs motocycle and i only weight about 150). My suggestion is get a bike that fits you right, and for me I'll most likely only be riding it at night time when its relatively safer.

Bikes are easy, just remember one tip that'll save you a lot of pain. Look at where you want to go, not at what your about to hit if you dont change your course. A bike is very intuitive to your senses.

in florida, i herd.. havnt looked into it, if you have over $25000 in life insurance you arnt required to have bike insurance. remeber, they insure the vehical, that is why a 100k car is more to insure than a 18k car. a 8 or 9k bike cant be more to insure than a new car.


on a side note, do not get a big sports bike, everyone has stressd it enough i think, but you will lay it down. they are too powerfu for a begginer rider. if you launch it above 1500rpms and dont know what your doing, you are on your ass and the bike is scratched up. i rode my friends yz250 dirt bike last night, it is fast as shit and i have trouble keeping the front wheel down between shifts, his brother has a yz429 (4 stroke) and that thing is WAY too fast. you might wana find a friend or something with a bike to teach you the basics first because you will be pissed if you lay down your new bike

How much are you looking to spend? If I were you I look into getting a Ninja 250R or 500R they get really good gas mileage. You can buy a newer one cheap. They have enough power to keep you busy, but dont have enough to surprise you.

A 500R will run low 13s in the 1/4 mile, thats plenty fast enough for a beginner. Since your just going to sell it at winter time, I wouldnt waste $4000 on a new +600cc Sportbike. A 500R doesnt have full fairings so if you drop it you dont have to worry about scratching or breaking your fairings.. Just something to keep in mind.

I'm going to take a motorcycle course to get decent at riding so I hopefully don't lay a nice looking bike down.

I think I can spend about 3-4k

- Buy a used bike without lots of expensive plastic to start. You will drop it. If you've never ridden, you'll be blown away by a 20 yr old Honda NT650 with 40 bhp. You don't need 100 hp to start.
- Figure out how much you want to spend on the bike, then deduct $1000 and get a good helmet, jacket, gloves, boots
- Deduct another $100 (or whatever it costs in your state) and take the MSF course. Definitely worth it.

Insurance isn't that bad - just shop around. Some ins companies rate based on engine size, some on style (sportbike, cruiser, standard), and different ins companies have different blacklists. I pay ~$350/yr. for full coverage on a $4000 bike, <25 single male.

i really don't know how much shipping would be. but yeah, i know it has a lot of miles, but it's very fast ,very reliable, never wrecked, never been on the ground...i just want SOMEBODY to buy it..it's of no use to us..just sitting in my dad's shop at work..

..by the way..i have a...ehhh...98 i think..if not that it's a 97 model Honda CR-125...pretty fast... i'll get a pic up for you...

CR 125 isn't that the 2 stroke line of dirt bikes for Honda?

125 would be quicker, but not enough power to keep up with the higher CCs. Sounds like a dirtbike to me though, which could be street legalized perhaps (depending on your state). I could be wrong, but I coulda sworn CR is dirtbike line up.

Yes a CR125 is a dirtbike, and no it wouldnt be ideal for driving on the streets.

Eventhough its $350.. Its well worth it.. See if your state allows you to skip the riding section of the test for your license if you pass it.

Crating and shipping circa $300-500 cross-country, maybe a little less for you. Cheaper to find a friend to ride it up and pay his plane fare back.

Boots are secondary, but if you get into the sportbike seriously you'll want 'em. You'll also need pants or a suit to ride on the track (which you'll want to do if you get serious about the gixxer).
