So...has anyone else seen this yet? I just watched it tonight and I thought it was good, but it could have been a lot better. I'm not going to short change the movie's strengths...the battle scenes were fucking epic and the story was fairly strong. Where does it fail? The dialogue. As with seemingly all movies based on Frank Miller's comics (including Sin City), the dialogue seems forced and without pace. In one scene Spartans are speaking eloquent, almost middle english and in the next they use dialogue that might as well have been taken from any modern Hollywood blockbuster. That wouldn't be annoying if the movie hadn't taken place over 2000 years ago. If you've ever seen Sin City, you'll know what I mean. Miller pushes the dialogue so far that it becomes almost annoying. It tried for the feel and rythym of 1930-1940s slang so hard that it became so abrasive that it was almost unwatchable. 300 isn't that far gone, but it's certainly noticable. So yeah...it's got phenominal action scenes, a decent story, and shitty dialogue. You be the judge.

Well...the whole thing with the apple is that he's eating while surrounded by piles of bodies. I guess it's supposed to show how much of a hard ass he is. I actually thought that was kind of funny.

Was it flooded with special effects? The trailers appeared that there was a lot of special effects going on, or was it just "bait"?

It depends on how you define "special effects". It relies a lot on what's called "stylized violence" which means that if, say, a guy's leg gets cut off, the severed leg and blood are computer animated. From the look of the movie I'd say it was shot in digital and had a decent amount of computer enhancement done, but not exactly what I'd call "effects". You have to remember that this is a comic book movie by the same guy who did Sin City. Just like Sin City much of the background is computer enhanced and some of the real scenes as well. It's not loaded with superficial effects...they're just more subtle and less noticable.

I thought the movie was amazing. I really enjoyed it. It was a visual orgasm for me. I liked it. I'll watch it again. But the apple pissed me off.

Thats cool... I could deal with that. Though, I haven't seen Sin City yet. It's on my to watch list. I'll be renting it soon.
