86 Prelude Si: Is it worth $500??
I am looking at buying an 86 prelude for a daily driver. I know nothing about Hondas so bear with me.
Anyway it has over 200k miles on the motor but runs fine. From what I have talked to the guy about everything else seems pretty decent on it. The real question is: Is it worth it to risk a 200k mile motor and maybe have to put a new motor in it? Anyone know a ballpark for the cost of something like that?? Thanks, Steve |

hows the body? if its not a complete rustbucket than I'd say its worth it. If the engine has been taken care of, than you could probably reach close to 300k, but its hard to say. If the body is good that would make a hell of a sleeper to drop something else into.

Ok say I get this car, what kind of price I am looking at to replace the motor? Again I am not familiar with Hondas.
Thanks for the input, Steve |

well your going to need engine mounts i think (is an 86 a b20 yet?, even if it is that old b series is like an ugly stepchild to the new b series..old mounts may not work.), the engine itself I guess is up to you. To me, it seems wrong to put anything less than an h22 into a prelude. but its your choice.
ultimatly I think your biggest problem is going to be finding parts. Aftermarket support is not huge with anything less than 88. But thats also good, because you wont see anyone rolling with a ride like that. as for actual prices if I had to roughly ballpark: about 3k for an h22 about 400 for mounts add on about 2k (or whatever your comfy with) for the "oh crap, I didn't expect this" costs |

bear in mind thats just my guess. I'm sure somebody else could give another guess. But generally take the figure you'd think would be right, and double it.

Cosidering that it is already a B20A motor, get a complete swap, $2200? Installation, $400? then maybe the ("oh crap, I didn't expect this" costs) which shouldn't be too much... if any... and you're ready to go... then a VTEC head would be nice...
I almost picked a VERY clean one up for $2000. 1991 as clean as can be. |

preludes have always been a blast to drive, even the late model ones... as far as the engine... i wouldnt mod it, just save for a b18. its going to be the most reliable and to my knoweldge its almost a strait drop in. i do not like hybrid motors becasuse i have yet to see one last over a year(on a daily driver... not track car) without some kind of problem going on.

even though it technically is a b series, I've heard that the mounts are not the same. meaning that for any swap you may need new mounts. anyone else heard of this?
