Help - Looking for good 195/60-15 tires...
Well, like the title says, I'm looking for a good set of 195/60-15 tires (for stock wheels) that will do very well in dry conditions and also do well in the wet (I live where it rains a lot). I have heard mixed opinions before, but I was just hoping some people could throw out some ideas with reasons, because I need some new ones soon.

Here's my pick..
Yokohama Avid T4.. Solid performer under all conditions. Very economical as well. But why not do the rim thing at the same time? Wouldnt that be a strategic move...? ::

Your pics didn't work, but I had some Avid H4s on my GTi and liked them OK. I'm not going to get rims anytime soon b/c there are other things I want first. I'm just sliding all over the place on these tires though, so I thought I'd get them taken care of first. Drop will come before rims for sure
Thanks for the reply

why not go with some lower profile tires? maybe like a 50 or 55 series instead of 60?

Because it would look funny. Low profile tires w/ no drop on 15s would not look good IMHO. I'm keeping the stock look, I just want to know what tires would be good.

LMAO..
Sorry, I meant pick. You shouldnt go with lower profile, cause the overall diameter will be screwed.. not a good idea.

Yeah, I was looking at the Yoko AVS intermediats, as well as the Pirelli P6000s, but I'm leaning toward the AVS now... only thing is that they wear fast.

screwed as in changed..
on 16's you shout be sitting on 50.. on 17's... 40. It's not recommended that you use more than + or - 5 (profile figure) difference.

forget any Pirelli product unless its the Zero series or the newer P6/7 all the rest are made here by armstrong, doesn't mean they're bad, just not what they used to be. Yoko AVS Int is a crappy, overpriced tire with very poor wet handling characteristics due to really poor evacuation.
Bridgestone RE-730s are oustanding tires for the price with excellent wet and dry properties. The Michelin Pilot SX MXX3 is another great choice. As is the Bridgstone SO-3 Since you did not mention price I would most rec the Michelin Pilot Sport, not the size you specified, but its real close. Best tire in the world. I know this from experience. on the cheap side of things I can also heartily recommend the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712. An excellent tire for the price, also from experience. all other things being equal, the RE-730 is the way to go for the average budget. You will not be disappointed. |

I agree, if you dont want to spend much money your best bet will be the Kumho 712's. They are great in the rain, and sticky enough to keep you from sliding all over. Remember tire pressure plays a big role in loss of traction too..

That's some great info, but those Bridgestone tires don't come in the size I need :: Neither do the Kumhos... I'd really like to stick to the stock size.

I'm looking for 195/60-15 I looked it up and didn't find one in that size. If I can get that, I'll go for it, otherwise I'll probably get the 950. Thanks for the help Demonic

I was convinced they did. I even checked a few of their corp sites, nothin. FYI tho... the outer dia of the 195/60 is an average (I averaged 8 of their tires) of 24.1", the 205/55 averaged 23.8"
Thats a mere .3" this will have minimal effect on your speedo (2.7mph at 75) and offers you a larger contact patch. Just my two cents. Either way, good luck, but lemme know what price you are paying before you buy, I'll find you a better one. |

Thanks for the info... i had 205/55 before and they bulged and looked a little funny, so I think I'm just going with the RE950 tires. I read some decent reviews about them, and I'll eventually be getting rims anyway. My local firestone is giving a buy 3 get 1 free deal + they are giving me some cash for the tires I have now... so I can get a set mounted and balanced for a little under $300. Sound like a good deal? I kind of want to just get them locally and have them put on instead of ordering them, having them shipped to my apt, etc.
Thanks again for all of your help Demonic.

Well, I got the 950s today, and so far they seem pretty nice, but I didn't have too much of a chance to test them out in dry conditions b/c it is dumping rain today. In the wet, they are doing well though. But then again, the tires I had on there before were Fisk Phantoms (they were on there when I got the rims used)...

Fisk! Funny! Discount gave me one for a few days cause the tire they said they had wasn't there, when i came back they told me to "eh, just keep it" uuuuhhh... ok. I had it mounted on a steelie for a spare, not that I could even use it on the front cause of my brake rotors

I like your choice those are great tires, I would have gone 195-55, it would have offered you more of a tire selection, or 195-50 would have unlocked many wonders, and despite your worries about having a low profile those are hardly low profile.
At 55 you could have had the RE010s stock equipment on the ITR, those tires are like pencil erasers, very soft very sticky, dont last long, or at 50 you have the RE730s and S03s. But since you are staying stock you will not be disappointed with the 950s those tires use the UniAT2 anyway, which you will notice in the rain. One thing I can say about the potenzas are, keep up the tire pressure F/32 R/30 (cold) that is a perfect combo with the 60 profile, reduces some of that sidewall flex, and gives you a more direct feel |
