RedLine
How harmful is it to the engine to shift at the redline? I shift between 7500-8000 rpms (my VTEC engagement point is at 5800 rpms)

Shifting Points!
I would say that what alot of people refer to as tachin out is not a very good thing. Lots of engine problems can occur especially in honda which are known to have weak crower rods. But about the shifting point, you want to try and shift at the top of your power band or just when you reach maximum power. Most honda maximum power occurs 300 to 500 rpm's before the redline. You just need to feel and listen for it basically. Hope this helps, if not feel free to email me.

well, actualy you want to shift past peck so you can be higher in the power band to get back to peak power again. i found that 7200-7500 rpms is a good shift point to stay in vtec, if you fall out of vtec then you wont be nearly as fast.

Well I would definitely agree with 4thgenlude (guy has alot of knowledge). You do not want to fallout of vtec or you will certainly lose time. About running into the redline, try not too. I have done it a couple of times slightly with no problems, but you never know how much your engine will take. Good Luck

Pro: Shifting at redline gets you more power in the next gear because your revs are higher, even if your power is actually decreasing a little from 7000-7400 RPM's (7500-8000 on most of our tachs). This leads to quicker times.
Con: Running you car to redline constantly will oviously decrease your engine life. This may sound bad, but you should run your car to the fuel cutoff once just to see where it is. Most 5th Gens (don't know about 4th Gen) have a fuel cutoff on the stock tach at ~8000. However, mine is at ~7800. It won't hurt it to do it once or twice, that is what the cutoff is for. Once you find the cutoff, in order to get the quickest times, you should shift just before the fuel cutoff. hope the helps... |

Weak crower rods in a stock Honda? Huh? ------ Like everyone has stated, even though our cars are made for high RPM's, does not mean that it does not put some extra wear on it. On a side note, my car has an 8,500rpm cutoff. |
