Project: Intercooler water spray!
I did this project along time ago.... since last summer to be exact. Pdigg's post about CRYO2 vs N2O reminded me to get these pictures up. If you cannot afford to get an N2O spray system for your intercooler, try this alternate method:
Go to a junyard and pick up a decent size winshield washer reservoir. The one I picked up came off from an older model VW Golf. It really doesnt matter. I chose this because I knew that I can mount it easily by just looking at the existing holes for mounting. This cost me $3. I had some aluminum flat bar left over from previous projects and made my own brackets: Refer to pic 1 These are the nozzles for the windshield wiper off of that same VW Golf from the junkyard.. It cost $2: Refer to pic 2 I dug a channel along the length of the styrofoam to prevent the tubing from getting pinched. As you can see, I have it split for the 2 winshield nozzles: Refer to pic 3 I grounded one wire from the pump and ran the other wire through the firewall. I placed a switch and routed the other end of the switch to a non-constant power source. Find the black/yellow wire from the ignition. That's what I used. The switch is the most expensive part of this project..... it cost me $5 from Radio Shack... ha ha.. Refer to pic 4 This is how it looks like. The tubing is not visible at all. The only thing that can be seen are the 2 nozzle tips pointing towards the intercooler. You can also see the reservoir on the left side. Refer to pic 5 I rigged 2 check valves somewhere along the tubing to break off the static head or the "siphon effect" each time I spray. This is a must! Otherwise it will drain the reservoir after one burst. ***Of course, you can always just tap from your stock reservoir. I chose not to since I rather just have plain water spraying vice a winshield washer solution. If you tap from your stock windshield washer reservoir, the pressure going to the actual windshield washer nozzle will drop since it will have to provide volume to the intercooler as well... now both the windshield and the intercooler may not get the stream of fluid you want. The way I set-up mine, I can also access the top cover to where I can fill it up with ice...... ha ha ha... that is plain fucking rice! But I dont care, it's the functionality that counts. On hot days summer days, I normally give it a quick couple of burst before I drive off...... Last edited by thermal : 11-16-2005 at 01:50 AM. |

Thank you
Where did you get the check valves? Hoe Depot? Do you remember the size or just picked whichever ones fit the hoses? |

On warm days like on summer, aluminum seems to absorb radiant heat from the sun. By squirting some water to it, it cools it down dramatically.........
