I think that's often true. But sometimes you fall out of contact with people you really didn't want to because of things beyond your control. For instance, I had to switch high schools pretty much right between middle school and high school (let's just say it wasn't by choice) and at that age it's really hard to maintain face to face relationships with people. So I ended up with a lot of friends I really cared about that I slowly lost touch with. I've managed to find at least one of them through myspace.
