I think its mainly due to size, the largest crt tv i've seen is 36" so when people want something bigger they had to go to projection tv's and projection tv's kinda suck (they're a huge box, limited viewing angle, bulb seems to always need replacing).
so someone made a tv that has a large screen yet is small in overall size, has a great viewing angle, and no bulb to replace and people jumped on it.
have you seen what they're working on now? basically a tv thats just a flexible screen that can be rolled up if you wanted.
