First off, better parenting would have helped prevent this.
Second, 30 million is not a reasonable amount for a suit. The girl went willingly to meet with this guy. Had the parents questioned where their daughter was going maybe this could've been avoided.
Third, this quote from the story again goes back to point #1:

Lastly, fuck MySpace. I'm tired of that fad. Maybe this will be what breaks it down. Or at the very least, turns it into a moderated community.
