Well...the fact that it's unscheduled is really the church's fault. I mean really, they should've picked someone to succeed JP II when he starting getting his ass kicked by Parkinson's a few years ago. Seems to me that would've been the responsible thing to do (although not wholely sympathetic). its papal tradition not to do that until he dies. im sure they started thinking of canadates, but its unschedualed as far as not a yearly thing. theres supposta be some downtime when all the head cardnals meet in the vatacin to vote on a new pope. speed is not an issue for them.
