If it's self powered then the receiver isn't driving the sub, so the impedance of the receiver/sub shouldn't matter. Besides, if the receiver is spec'd for 8 ohms and the speaker for 4, you need to worry about blowing the receiver not the speaker.
For a self-powered sub check if you have an output on your sub for self-powered. It will be an RCA jack for the sub, a pre-out.
