Car and Driver did a COMPLETE review of both... they had like 4-5 guys drive both of them several times and compare them... it is what they do for a living...
EVERYONE said they didn't know why but the evo was just better...
The evo ran better track times than the sti too...
I've seen and read a bunch of reviews and just about all of them have agreed... the wrx is more powerfull, a little more stable and looks like the obvious choice on paper... but they all like the evo more...
If I was going to buy one of these cars I'd be hardpressed to decide... I don't like the way either one looks so there's NO winner there imo... I like the fact that the evo is based on a platform that's been around AND succesfull for a LONG time now.. there's TONS of aftermarket support (true also for subaru but not the same)...
HOWEVER... the sti has a 2.5 and runs MUCH lower boost... the evo is running max of 18-20psi... that's just about as much as you're gunna be able to run stock... you'd have to make some serious changes to get more hp our of that motor... the sti on the other hand is 2.5 and runs like 14.5 max... you could just upgrade the turbo and fuel delivery and have a LOT more power...
But I've heard LOTS of bad stuff about the whole subaru drivetrain... and weak drivetrains are NOT cool on high hp cars...
Overall I think I'd get .... F it I can't decide.. .and I don't have the money for either so. I'll stop rambling now.
And to answer someone elses Q... I'd rather spend HALF the amount of money an sti or evo would be on a 92-95 civic and build that... or a 1st gen talon or a 240... etc.. ANYTHING that looks good and could be just as if not faster than the "fast" ugly production car.
