If he really wanted to put the effort into it yeah he could have killed him with something else. Guns are just the easy way to do it. Just pick up a gun and shoot somebody, bam, easy. If people didn't have guns there probably wouldn't be so many killings since let's face it, people are lazy. You probably wouldn't see someone doin a driveby with ninja stars if they couldn't get a gun...I mean really, what do you need the gun for if say you live in a city? Shootin the deer in your back yard?
