I would say if you aren't able to tell them whats up there is a problem. Yes some reason is needed, possibly some details as to why you're breaking it off. I have found though that some girls dont let it drop and they try to work you for details you just dont have. Or they'll spin it around so its your fault.... either way talking about somethingm, maybe not a sit down convo but somethings need to be said and people should speak their mind.
It comes down to getting closure to an issue...
