ZEX kit on a stock motor ?

So i'm thinking about getting a ZEX kit for my 98 Civic DX. I've got i/h/e/ and a nifty little test pipe (not that it does anything just wanted to share) and the high volume AEM fuel rail along with a cam gear I haven't istalled yet. I'd like to get a 60-75 shot of ZEX and run it stock ? Is thiis safe or do i need to get new rods and pistons. Also, what would i run with a 75 shot ? Right now with i/h/e i run a 16.2. Stock I ran a 17.4 so......

from my understanding you can run a 75hp shot on a stock motor, with no problem.. You do want to run a Compression test before hand, and maybe like once a year just to keep tabs that you are in a SAFE range.
Please let us know how it goes... I shall be doing the same in the far future

run a 60shot, use the zex spark plugs.
damn, only 16.2 w/ all those mods? :paranoid:

I think taking 1.2s off your quarter mile time is pretty respectable for I/H/E

slowEJ6 10-23-2002 11:16 PM

stock its not a 17.4 second car....its a mid-high 16 second car. its all about the driver there. either that or its a very weak motor cuz ive run almost as fast (.2 slower) as that with only exhaust. :rambo:

Yes 65-75 shot is ok on a stock engine. Just make sure your compression checks ok. That's a thing to watch for.

You'll need to retard your timing accordingly. 4-6 degrees I think. But look in the manual. Also run plugs that are 2 steps colder. NGK makes some good plugs for this.

Mini FAQ

Zex is nice because the install is cake. With no experience, expect to spend about 4 hours installing.

For an ignition, get the MSD digital SCI plus. It has an iginition retard made just for N2O

slowEJ6 10-24-2002 02:22 PM

a new ignition system isnt really necessary for the ZEX kit.

Id only run a 60 shot on a stock engine. If you want to go more then build the engine accordingly. My brother drives a 97 civic Ex 5speed with just a Intake and I spank himm in my accord and its an auto. I thought civics where faster I guess he just cant drive hehe.

True. But for the 65 & 75 shot size, you need to retard your timing. Rather than drive around with your timing retarded, you can use the SCI+ or any other MSD module (as long as you have an MSD ignition) to retard it only when the nitrous is active.

Just FYI 98CivicDude, retarded timing will slow you down under normal conditions. Just a thought.

slowEJ6 10-24-2002 03:11 PM

good point.

so let me get this right...i need to get an MSD igintion module and then i'll be safe to run a 60 shot ? I don't reall want to spend the money on new internals but if i have to, i will.
