how much HP by adding........

:) hey i got a question for u all !!!! HOW MUCH H.P will i gain if I add a muffler to my car? its a N1 muffler

prelude kid190 05-20-2002 08:11 PM

I GOT A 97 HONDA PRELUDE (auto)

ebpda9 05-20-2002 11:55 PM

none.

ChrisCantSkate 05-21-2002 07:35 AM

not a single one. mufflers dont do anything, you need a cat back exaust, then you can expect 6-9 hp

Mushroom 05-21-2002 08:57 AM

Actually, you'll lose power by adding muffler. Subtracting muffler gains power.

Honda_Gurl 05-21-2002 09:47 AM

how can u LOSE hp?? i don't understand that

and i've talked to a couple people who say that adding a catback doesn't even give you much of a gain. one guy i talked to said his gave him like 1 hp

ChrisCantSkate 05-21-2002 11:23 AM

well, a muffler dosnt actualy increase the flow of exaust at all, because you still have the same size piping. with headers and exaust, you've increased your entire exaust size, and could yeild 15hp. now saying he only got 1 hp might have been peak hp. but max hp, meaning the most gained on the whole rpm band you will pick up some mid range that helps more than your peak.

Honda_Gurl 05-21-2002 05:12 PM

thanks 4thgen  actually when i got my muffler, i also added new piping, so i don't know if it helped me gain any hp or not. but i'm still confused as to how you can LOSE hp???

prelude kid190 05-22-2002 09:42 AM

what if i change the piping will it add horse power !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Violent Apathy 05-22-2002 09:45 AM

SURE WHY NOT ?????
yup typing in all caps and adding a lot of punctuation marks adds like 50hp to your message! just like altezza tailights and aluminum wings do for your car! :D

Drive a car with no muffler. Now add a muffler. You've lost hp. More muff = more power lost. Damn the muff!

I know, the original poster was probably talking about *replacing* his stock muffler with an N1, but it's not what he said. I just like to fight the misconception that adding mufflers add power - you're really just recucing the amount of power lost in using the restrictive stock muffler & piping.

To be additionally specific, there is also an advantage to creating a bit of a vaccuum to pull hot exhaust gases from the manifold, so you probably wouldn't want *nothing* behind the engine.

k i didn't come up with this ... but my buddy told me that mufflers can add horse cause of compression rate ..or something like that...especially in higher RPMs when the exhaust is really flowing fast....i can't really explain this cause i forgot exactly what he said but can any one help on this?... but ya i agree that u should get the whole system done (piping) thats where the real gain is..

KwikR6 05-31-2002 02:43 PM

This myth of adding I/H/E to your car will make it a million times faster is old...it won't...nor will it do much amazing stuff to your car...you'll lose a lot of top end speed...A guy here with a SiR went from running 16's to HIGH 17's after he added I/H/E...save your money...go FI..

ChrisCantSkate 05-31-2002 03:26 PM

well, i/h/e on a preldue you can get your 1/4 mile to about a 14.6-7. (from 15.1 4th gen only)and you'll loose low end power cause your loss of back pressure. he's right though, bang for the buck go FI.
