D16Y5...Just a quick question
I have one quick question. I'm going to autocross my 97 Civic HX this year. At this point I don't really have the green for a head or engine swap for my D16Y5. Is there anything I can do with it to get some more oomph out of it? The other thing is I am planning to run C Street Prepared so there are some rule considerations as well.
Thanx in advance. |
maybe the basic boltons: intake/header/hi-flow cat/exhaust ? the exhaust and the cat will be good after the turbo or swap.
|
Y5's, stock for stock, can be just as fast, if not quicker, than Y8's.
Y5 cams have more lift.......or is it duration (shit now I cant remember which). What are your ultimate plans for the car? Thats probably the point to make before we start suggesting what to waste money on. |
nitrous anyone
|
^for autocross? naah
Autocross is better with more low-end and better grip. Just get some wider wheels and good tires, sway bars and stiffer springs. That keeps you out of the engine. |
yeah but a small shot on WOT would be perfect. Just something since i'm sure that little d15 is pretty anemic
|
Yeah just in time to hit the brakes and enter the turn.
hx's are also d16 |
Thanx for the input so far, I'm definatley getting wheels and tires. I'm looking at 13" rims running 225/50R13's to make up for the tall diff. gear in the transaxle, sway bars, strut bars, and struts for sure. I'll probably do the basic bolt ons for now on the engine.
 |
Well...I know 13's are too small for ex brakes... Do you know if your pads are the same as the ones for ex's? If they are you cannot run those wheels (diameter is too small).
|
they actually make wheels that are 13" and 225's??
|
The largest 13 size I know if is 205/60/13
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....Compare1=y es Stock civic vx wheels are 13" |
If you use 225, it will rub. I think the suspension on the EX and HX is the same. I have used 215 before and there are times when I rubbed.....
As far as performance, the HX has a very economically friendly ECU and emission. Last time I checked, nobody makes a cat-back system for that cuz of the location of the catalytic converter which is directly below the runners. What I've seen people do is completely convert the exhaust system to an EX. This will require using EX header, catalytic converter, and exhaust pipe. I wouldnt know what to do with the ECU tho. In your case, an EX OBD2a ECU might work... but dont quote me on that. After all, you do have VTEC, just for a different purpose. VTEC-E. Isnt it that BDC has an HX? |
an EX tranny would help for cheap
|
hmm indeed, short gears.
he could do a mini me swap. Or just find a D16 w/vtec for cheap |
OK, I just ordered a cold air intake for my car. I think most of the next mods are going to be mostly suspension upgrades. Adjustable struts, springs, sway bars, and strut tower braces.
|
just some advice on strut tower bars: dont buy any that have hinge/pivot points (this includes pricey spoon and tein).
An oem em1 si/del sol/gsr bar works just fine, and theyre cheeeaaap |
I was just thinking that right before I read it. Thank for the info.
|
neuspeed gets my vote for the strutbars, and for the sways i used the suspension techniques in the rear, oem 22mm for the front.
and dc sports tend to bend. P.S. I can get you the parts. |
the neuspeed bar is very nice, I just wish it had a mounting point on the upper firewall frame
|
I agree. That is why I prefer the OEM strut bars. I'm gonna make an attempt to make my own one of these days....
|
Id like to try that too...but I dont think jb weld will be good enough for my connections
