God I f*ckin hate math

So help me out...

I have these polynomials:
(8y^2-14y-15) (3y^2-7y-6)
------------------ *-------------
(6y^2-11y-10) (4y^2-9y-9)

Factored:
(-2y+5)(-4y-3) (-3y-2)(-y+3)
------------------*---------------
(3y+2)(2y-5) (4y+3)(y-3)

Now...I need to simplify it down.
So my question is:
Can I cancel out the (3y+2) and the (-3y-2) since the "-" changes the signs? Same for the other ones that change signs?
If that's right...doesnt everything cancel out???

Is the answer a vegetable?

pdiggitydogg 01-20-2005 11:46 AM

No, a kangaroo

WTF... its 23. :D

Okay, its not really... Its harder then 4x4-6, I ain't gettin it. :paranoid:

pdiggitydogg 01-20-2005 01:19 PM

No no, it doesnt equal anything.
I just need to simplify it to basic components.

GT40FIED 01-20-2005 03:38 PM

Seriously...when the fuck in real life would you use something like that? I hate college.

factor -1 out of (-3y-2) and you get (3y+2) :) it cancels that out then you can do the same for all of them and it'd factor to 1 i believe....

ebpda9 01-20-2005 03:55 PM

yeah, the answer is 1

pdiggitydogg 01-20-2005 04:02 PM

since all cancel?

ebpda9 01-20-2005 05:20 PM

yup

Wren57 01-20-2005 07:25 PM

I believe the answer would be -1... ?

pretty sure everything cancels out to 1

I know that I've been out of school for nearly 9 years, and I've never needed to know that.:o

yeah you end up with (-1)(-1)*(-1)(-1) which equals 1

ShEaNy 01-21-2005 10:34 AM

yea i think there right..its 1...

ebpda9 01-21-2005 10:42 AM

that was easy. i don't get the factoring part.

pdiggitydogg 01-21-2005 11:37 AM

Factoring is a bitch.
Tell me ONE person that actually does factoring in real life (other than math teachers and mathmaticians)

MissJDM 01-22-2005 01:55 AM

I agree with it being 1 and I verified it twice.
If you make the leading terms positives by taking +1 out of each of those negatives:
(-1)(2y-5)(-1)(4y+3)(-1)(3y+2)(-1)(y-3)
----------------------------------------------
(3y+2)(2y-5)(4y+3)(y-3)

Remove common terms:
(-1)(-1)(-1)(-1) = 1

Then if you check the answer with y=0

(8y^2-14y-15) (3y^2-7y-6)
------------------ * ----------------
(6y^2-11y-10) (4y^2-9y-9)

(-15) (-6) 90
------ * ------- = ---- = 1
(-10) (-9) 90

Double check it with y=1
(8y^2-14y-15) (3y^2-7y-6)
------------------ * ----------------
(6y^2-11y-10) (4y^2-9y-9)

(8-14-15) (3-7-6)
------------ * -----------
(6-11-10) (4-9-9)

(-21) (-10) 210
------ * ------- = ------ = 1
(-15) (-14) 210

I know my answer is a tad late, I haven't been getting to all of the boards lately. If you have other questions, feel send it my way. :)

pdiggitydogg 01-22-2005 09:50 PM

Oh there will probably be more later on...I suck at math and I have so much to do...

Oh yeah, and thanks for the help...it is 1

FlooredAccord 01-25-2005 01:35 PM

You guys are way too s-m-r-t, I mean s-m-a-r-t for me!
