Official: Are you obese?

Obesity is diagnosed by using a measurement called the Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI=w/h^2

w=weight in kilograms (pounds/2.2)
h=height in meters (inches/39.4)

IE - Myself
145lbs=66kg
70"=1.78m
=
66kg/(1.78m x 1.78) => BMI=20.8

World Health Organization Set BMI Ranges:
19-25: Healthy BMI
25-29: "Over Weight"
30+: Obese

You do not need to share your results (duh).
I think that if anyone falls in the obese catagory, serious changes need to take place, for your health.
(BMI of 30+ puts you at serious risk of diabetes)
(And speaking of diabetes, if you do fall that high start eating complex carbs...fuck atkins)

Recent studies, however, show that the lowest death rates from all causes occurred in men with a BMI of 22.5-24.9 and women 22-23.4. Surveys indicate that most Americans are above these levels...highly above.

GT40FIED 12-06-2004 11:11 PM

Haha. I'm close. 6'4" at 230lbs = 28.3582899305555555555555

But that's insane. I'm far from obese.

MissJDM 12-07-2004 12:46 AM

Jeebus, 19.12

AzCivic 12-07-2004 12:55 AM

BMI what a rediculous joke!! so a muscle bound freak is just as at risk for fat people problems as the same height fat fool standing in line with a sweaty forehead at Mcdonalds.

BTW my "BMI" is 29.9

Yeah...I've always been tall, but for some reason I love short chicks. Go figure.

Actually that can be true. Look at Govenor Arnold. He spent his entire life bodybuilding yet somehow ended up needing heart surgery a few years ago. Those muscle heads often overwork their heart to the point where it can be worse off than some land whale fat bastard. So yeah...I agree. BMI is a joke.

IALuder 12-07-2004 07:01 AM

65kg/(1.80m x 1.80)=20.06 BMI. yay im healthy. i would never would have guess being 5'11" 142LBS and very little body fat.:|

he also took steroids when he was a body builder, i'm sure that had something to do with it.

yeah, this BMI thing would work if EVERYONE had the same body type and an increase in body weight always meant an increase in body fat.

mavaaoife 12-07-2004 05:12 PM

Im thick, not too skinny, but not too fat..5'4"1/2 and 150lbs.. im not ganna even bother counting my bmi... i'd probably say im like 50 or something...

Most tall guys like shorter girls.. My dad who is 6'5" married my mom who is 5" and they were married for 15 years...

Actually yours is 25.97...give or take for that extra 1/2". A far cry from 50.:thumbsup:

pdiggitydogg 12-07-2004 06:26 PM

I always figured most guys liked shorter girls anyway...gives them the feeling of "manliness". I dont like it when a girl Im out with is taller than me...so I really hate going to weddings w/ my girl friends (who have to wear high-heels).

Wren57 12-07-2004 06:51 PM

142pounds, 5'10", 2.0% bodyfat = 20.5BMI.

Calculator doesn't really work because if I am all muscle and no fat, but if I had no muscle and more fat, the BMI would be the same but I would be more much inclined to be called obese...

mavaaoife 12-07-2004 06:54 PM

thanks steve....
