Engine cleaning?

Does anyone know of a good place to find a "do's and dont's" of engine cleaning? The engine bay in my 98 Civ has NEVER been cleaned, and I'm thinking that a pressure washer would be a little much for it.

Any tips? There wasn't anything in the Step-by-Step forum.

Thanks!

well that's how we use to clean engines when i use to detail cars. Just make sure you put a plastic bag on the distrubutor cap. Cover it real good and you should be fine because the pressure washer shoots out air as well as water. Use some degreaser let sit brush areas that need it then pressure wash away... and be sure to start car immediatelty after.

i never had a problem with just spraying the motor. Remember those things were ment to get wet. The top might not be open but the bottom sure is and waters gets sprayed up when you drive. I just wouldn't dump ice cold water on a hot motor, you're likely to crack the block that way.

Use a toothbrush, WD40, a rubber chicken, 2 AAA batteries, and a bag of Wassabe-cover peas!

Dishwashing luquid always works best for me. Lather eveything up & then just rinse it off.

Simple green. Just spray it everywhere, let it sit and then wash it off with a hose. This is how i cleaned my engine in my ild civic. Jut let then engine dry before you go driving around.
