Unsprung weight?
Ok, i am looking into some new rims, and i am curious how much better buying a 15lb 17" Motegi Trak Lite Forged rim is than buying a rim that is 10 lbs heavier?
what does the difference in 40-50 lbs of unsprung weight actually mean to my acceleration and 1/4 mile times? help me out fools, O and what would be equivalent to the Motegi Trak Lites at 15lbs for 17"x7" rims?? FORGED!!! Thanks Dan |
40 lbs would mean night and day.... it would reduce your acceleration, thus killing your 60's .... i drove a friends Eclipse with 18s, not only did it have a larger rotational diameter but they were heavy too...all i can say is that my 86 buick century felt faster.. ok, maybe not but it was much slower... ;)

yeah it;s just the weight and rotational mass of some of the rims that kill you....lighter is going to be easier to turn up and get you where you are going...
I would recommend lighter if you are looking for speed etc....but for looks then the heavier... |
how about cf rims ? ;)
EDIT: Does't the unsprung weight matter only for the suspension ? i know the evo 8 uses billet aluminum lower control arms just to reduce the unsprung weight |
i don't think its only suspension... as far as i know its: suspension/brakes/rims/tires

they should make plastic rims...i mean they say "PLASTICS MAKE IT POSSIBLE"... :D

yes they will.
i went from 17's with 205/40/17 to Rota 15's with 205/55/15 and its night and day with way too big of tires. So, get the lightweights man. Function also equals form when you know what youre doing. 15/16's look a hell of a lot better than clown shoes. its a civic man, not a 'lac. |
