help me fix this........

ok i really need some help with drywall patching...
ive tried lookin online but the stuff there makes no sense to me :P
anyways this is my situation:
ive got a hole in the wall about the size of lets say a... fist
i put a mesh over it, bought spackling paste (thats what the guy at home depot told me to get), and a "knife"
so im trying to put this stuff over the mesh but it looks horrible... like around the hole the stuff keeps going through and not sticking so u can still see the holes of the mesh. i know im supposed to apply, and then use a drywall sponge to file... but the layer i applied looks so thin that im scared if i file ill be back to where i was an hour ago...

anybody know how to fix this properly??? cause im about to take a sheet of paper and tape it on, then paint over it (which i doubt will work well)

ahahah, i just started fixing a hole in my drywall.

you'll probably have to put a few layers on then sand it back til its smooth with the rest of the wall.

Well, depending on how large your fist is, you can:
Cut the hole into a square
Then take a piece of drywall, cutting it roughly 1.5-2.5" larger than the hole in the wall. (the more the better)
Now, take a razor knife and score 1 SIDE of the replacement square 1.5" along each edge.
What you do next is peel the drywall and paper off 1 side of the patch, leaving the other side of the paper. Just insert the plug and mud over the paper.

If the hole is larger than say, 3x4", Id suggest doing the same thing above, but also buy a 10-12" section of 1x1 (aka furring strip) and screw that into the good drywall around the hole, making a brace for the patch.

This is as good as I can explain it right now. I do drywall...fuck that mesh shit

edit***oh, and yes, it takes several coats of mud, and sanding before youre done. You really can use that mesh stuff and a ton of mud, but I just dont like to.

/\what he said, I'm takin the 80's paneling out of my basement right now and putting up all new drywall, its such a pain in the ass

Pff, I just throw 3/8 over the top of the paneling and use a lot more glue w/ 1" and 2" (when I find the studs) screws.
Make sure you sink any screw heads a little past the paper, or you'll see them after mudding
